Paper Towns Book Cover Recreations

PAPER TOWNS BOOK COVER RECREATIONS
PROJECT TYPE: Book Cover Design

OVERVIEW:
For this project, the focus was to find a book and create three different book covers for three different target audiences.

SOLUTION:
I chose to do the book Paper Towns by John Green. The target audiences I chose were:

- Middle Schoolers
- High Schoolers
- People In Their 20's

I knew that a lot of people actually judge a book by it's cover which leads them to pick it up and want to learn more. I wanted to create covers that were visually intriguing to each demographic listed.

PROCESS

BRAINSTORMING:
*I ended up reworking my demographic choices midway through so some of the demographics here might look a bit different.
I started off by creating a mood board for each demographic of what I wanted my book covers to possibly look similar to. Then I created a mind map to help me come up with many different ideas for each book cover.
SKETCHES:
I created sketches for each of the demographics consisting of many different ideas catered to each respective age group.
DRAFTS:
These are the sketches I created for the new demographics I chose that ultimately were on the final covers.

- Middle Schoolers (Left)
- High Schoolers (Middle)
- People In their 20's (Right)
DIGITIZED:
These are the digitized versions of the three chosen sketches.

FLATS:
These are the final results to the book covers:

For the middle schoolers, I created a colourful cover/jacket that includes nothing but paper elements. I believe this is something that kids would pick up and want to read with the colour palette chosen. I made the concept quite literal so they can easily understand.

For the high schoolers, I chose to go with a cover that made more sense to what the book is about. The story takes place in Orlando, FL, so I have a silhouette of the state with a cutout piece of paper pinned inside a spot on the state withe the title inside.

For the people in their 20's, I chose to do a cover based on the love aspect of the book. The two half-hearts get closer together the more you open the book. They can also represent map pins. They have a city skyline on them to add to the exploration theme.
MOCKUPS:
These are the mockups for the book covers:
REFLECTION:
I had a great time doing this project. Although it was a challenge, it was cool to design for different demographics. Luckily, I have been all three demographics so I would kind of go off experience or what I would currently do. So I had to put myself in the shoes of a person in each demographic. Paper Towns is one of my favorite books so it was fun to redesign a book I've loved for so long.
